Crosscurrents draws on a long visual culture of filmmakers who have turned their attention to the rhythms of urban life. Through careful framing, repetition, and tempo, the film explores how structure and spontaneity coexist within the city. It approaches the modern city as a system of intersecting currents shaped by consumption, social behaviour, and collective rhythms.
People move in streams, a constant flow. Eyes fixed on screens. The film defines the city as both a collective organism and a site of personal alienation. Gradually, fragments accumulate into a portrait of the city as a living network of flows and crossings. Individual paths overlap briefly before diverging again. Public and private blur in transit zones. Movements echo across locations. Patterns repeat in altered forms.
Moments of stillness interrupt the flow. A pause at a crossing. A glance that lingers. These breaks reveal tension within the system, where human presence resists full absorption into routine. The film holds on these moments, allowing space for ambiguity and reflection.
Crosscurrents invites the viewer to observe, to drift, and to recognise themselves within these overlapping movements.

Crosscurrents sluit aan bij een lange visuele traditie van filmmakers die de ritmes van het stedelijk leven onderzoeken. Met zorgvuldig gekozen frames, herhaling en tempo verkent de film hoe structuur en spontaniteit naast elkaar bestaan in de stad. De stad wordt benaderd als een systeem van kruislings stromende bewegingen, gevormd door consumptie, sociaal gedrag en collectieve ritmes.
Mensen bewegen in stromen, een constante flow. Blikken gericht op schermen. De film laat de stad zien als zowel een collectief organisme als een plek van persoonlijke vervreemding. Gaandeweg voegen fragmenten zich samen tot een portret van de stad als een levend netwerk van beweging en kruisingen. Individuele routes raken elkaar kort en lopen daarna weer uiteen. Publiek en privé vervagen in overgangszones. Bewegingen weerklinken op verschillende plekken. Patronen keren terug in andere vormen.
Momenten van stilstand onderbreken de stroom. Een pauze bij een oversteek. Een blik die blijft hangen. In die onderbrekingen wordt de spanning zichtbaar, waar menselijke aanwezigheid zich niet volledig laat opnemen in routine.
