Figures in a Landscape is a contemplative short film set in the Dutch bulb region. The initial spark for the project came from the painting Tulip Fields by Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof (c. 1890–1922) pointing me toward the classic Dutch bulb landscape.
The landscape is approached through painterly frames, where fields of color unfold as layered planes. Flowers and soil form shifting bands across the horizon, while the camera remains still, allowing the land to exist as a living composition.
This grounded perspective is paired with aerial images. From a steady, suspended position, the fields resolve into patterns. Lines, grids, and subtle irregularities emerge, revealing both the human shaping of the land and its organic movement. Together, these viewpoints create a dialogue between immersion and distance. Beneath its composed surface, the film acknowledges a landscape under pressure. Climate change and environmental regulation are reshaping the conditions of the bulb fields. Blooming periods shorten, and the continuity of this landscape becomes uncertain.
Figures in a Landscape offers a study of light, colour and structure, and a quiet reflection on a landscape in transition.

Figures in a Landscape is een contemplatieve korte film, gesitueerd in de Nederlandse bollenstreek. De eerste inspiratie voor het project kwam van het schilderij Tulpenvelden van Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof (ca. 1890–1922), dat mij richting het klassieke Nederlandse bollenlandschap leidde.
Het landschap wordt benaderd in schilderachtige kaders, waarin kleuren zich ontvouwen in gelaagde patronen. Bloemen en aarde vormen verschuivende banen langs de horizon, terwijl de camera stil blijft en het landschap laat bestaan als een levende compositie.
Dit perspectief op ooghoogte wordt gecombineerd met verstilde opnamen vanuit de lucht. Vanuit een stabiel, zwevend standpunt ontvouwen de velden zich als ritmes en structuren. Lijnen en subtiele onregelmatigheden tekenen zich af en tonen zowel de menselijke ordening van het land als de organische beweging ervan. Samen brengen deze perspectieven een wisselwerking tot stand tussen nabijheid en afstand. Onder het oppervlak erkent de film een landschap onder druk. Klimaatverandering en milieuregels veranderen de omstandigheden van de bollenteelt. Bloeiperioden worden korter en de continuïteit van dit landschap wordt onzeker.
De film biedt een studie van licht, kleur en structuur, en een ingetogen reflectie op een landschap in verandering.

Figures in a Landscape was shot in 4K using a mix of cameras and formats to support both flexibility and visual contrast.
The primary camera was a Nikon ZR, paired with NiSi PL-mount cinema prime lenses for most of the core footage. A Canon C80 served as the secondary camera, fitted with a Canon EF 300mm f/4 L lens.
Aerial footage was captured with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, using both the 24mm and 70mm lenses.
Sound was recorded on a Tascam FR-AV2 32-bit float field recorder, combined with an Audio-Technica BP 4025 stereo microphone.
The score was composed in Ableton Live, using instruments from Soniccouture, Spitfire Audio, Fracture Sounds and Crow Hill Company.
Editing and color grading were completed in DaVinci Resolve Studio.
